Pretty easy, but what if you do not know how to use ZIP? THEN IT IS TIME YOU LEARNED!! Get Winzip at www.winzip.com. Get PKzip at www.pkware.com. MAC users use STUFFIT. Linux users use gzip (included with all Linux versions).
Here is how: Double click on the ZIP file on the DVD and then select what directory you want to extract the files to. To do this, you will navigate over to the hard drive that X-Plane is installed on. For Windows users, this will probably be your C drive. Click around in your folders until you find the directory listed above. Windows users will probably see C: /X- System/resources /Earth nav data" as the folder they extract to, for example. If ZIP gives some error like "sorry, your current destination is locked", that means that ZIP is set to try to extract the files to the DVD,which is the wrong place since you need to extract the files to the "/X - system/resource s /Earth nav data" folder on your hard drive. If this happens, click through the error message AND THEN SELECT the "/XSystem/ resources /Earth nav data" FOLDER AS THE FOLDER THAT YOU WANT TO EXTRACT THE FILES TO. Hit the extract button if needed and the machine will grind away for maybe 20 minutes while it extracts the files to the "/X -System/ resources /Earth nav data" directory. Do not create individual folders for each scenery DVD inside the /EARTH NAV DATA/ folder. I
You may also have to do something like say "Select All" in ZIP to select ALL the little scenery files for extraction, and then select "Extract" or some similar menu item to extract the files into.I would be more specific, except with Mac users, Windows users, and dozens of different versions of ZIP out there I cannot tell you every detail of the copy you are using. But what you must do is simple: Extract the files from the DVD to the directories listed above. You can overwrite existing files. Do this for each of the 2 Mars CDs if you're insane enough to want to fly on Mars, but to the MARS Nav Data directory, of course. You can overwrite existing files. When done you will have installed scenery for the entire planet Earth (and possibly Mars, too).
HOW DO I INSTALL X-PLANE?Windows and Mac users do exactly the same thing. Just double click on the file on the DVD for your version of X-Plane, "X-System. 8.00 For Macintosh.sit" or "X-System 7.00 For Windows.exe" and when asked what directory to Extract the file to, simply choose the hard drive of your computer or wherever you want X-Plane to be installed. A folder called "X-System 800" will be placed there, with a copy of X-Plane inside it. Just go into that folder and double-click on the copy of X-Plane inside of it to go flying.NOTE: Mac users MUST update to StuffitExpander 7.0.3; version 7.0.0 that comes with OSX will cause problems when extracting. Other than that, don't ask us if it runs on Mac OSX! It runs on your Mac OSX just as the Mac comes from the factory, but Macs have emulators and other stuff to handle games and graphics applications. These might be called "Mac Classic" environment or something similar. Don't ask us about those details! We don't know anything about Macs except that X-Plane runs just fine on an OSX machine as long as you don't tamper with the Classic Environment. When it's running, we haven't a clue if it's running on OSX or OS9, except that it works just fine. Linux users will have to figure out how to use their particular YAST or RPM to put it all together. |
