There are several common specialty computers in
use in aviation in addition to well-known E6B and CR-type
computers. The Holding Pattern entry computer helps the
instrument pilot to visualize complicated holding and approach
procedures; and these graphical tools are a great help when action
heats up during IFR training. Although holding patterns may be used
on any instrument flight, holding clearances are issued
infrequently enough that pilots can get a little rusty on the
procedures. Visualizing a holding pattern from your current
position is one of the more challenging tasks in instrument flight.
The illustrated Holding Pattern Computer by ASA not only shows pilots which entry is appropriate for the clearance, but it also depicts clearly how to get to this entry from the present position. Holding pattern practice is now part of FAA, Canadian, and European instrument currency requirements. This handy pocket tool may be used as a refresher on the ground, as well as a quick reference in flight. Flight instructors will find this is an exceptionally useful tool for explaining procedures during training operations. |
