In order to learn about the limits of normal
flight, the student pilot is shown how to cross the limits and to
bring the aircraft back to normal flight again. This is essential
to understanding the flight envelope. Beyond maximum angle
of attack, the wing of the aircraft becomes aerodynamically
stalled. The aircraft is now falling instead of flying.
Aircraft are designed to be capable of stalling and recovering
according to the pilot's actions, and the student pilot learns this
flight sequence in order to be a better and safer pilot.
The spiral appears to be similar to a stall to the student pilot, but it is a very different maneuver. Because it appears to be similar, it is taught at the same time in the training sequence. This video helps the student pilot to understand and master the differences. ATP's Flight Training Video Series, based on the Flight Training Manual, has been created by experienced flight instructors and airline pilots, and is especially useful for the primary phase of flight training, both for the Recreational Licence, and the Private Pilot licence. There are ten ½-hour videos in this series:
