Instrument Refresher
An IPC* Simulator for Instrument-Rated Pilots

Differences Info: IP Trainer and On Top, and
IPC |
ASA has developed a new, interactive desktop
flight simulator to help instrument-rated pilots maintain
proficiency in the maneuvers outlined in the FAA instrument
currency requirements and to prepare for the Instrument
Proficiency Check (IPC). Unlike any other desktop flight
simulator available on the market today, Instrument
Refresher is a comprehensive tutorial and training platform
for instrument pilots, with benefits like:
- Lessons that cover all maneuvers required to maintain
instrument currency to including instrument approaches, holding,
intercepting and tracking using NAVAIDs;
- Virtual instructor evaluates user's performance and provides
feedback on how to execute and improve the procedures;
- Air Traffic Control and flight instructor speak to users to
simulate actual conditions;
- All approach charts and legends required for the lessons are
included;
- Performance graded against FAA Instrument Rating Practical Test
Standards (PTS); these standards are universal regardless of
country
- Free-flight mode lets pilots leave the training environment and
practice procedures and approaches anywhere in the world (without
the on-board instructor)
Instrument Refresher is recognized by the FAA as
an FAA/FITS training package.

Instrument Refresher gives pilots
24 simulated lessons divided into four "blocks" of learning:
- Radio navigation;
- Airwork;
- Enroute procedures;
- Instrument approaches
Flight instruction is in a standard IFR-equipped, photo-realistic,
and aerodynamically-accurate Cessna 172. This prepares the
candfidate for a basic IPC without a lot of extra custom IFR
equipment. Many candidates for an IPC are not prepared for basic
IFR flight ops if they have been flying on specialized equipment
(for example, Twin Otters, Beavers, or helicopters), or if they
haven't flown IFR for some time. This package focuses on THE
BASICS! |
 |
The Basics:
The IPC lessons cover all the basic approaches, holding
procedures, unusual attitudes, partial panel, radio communications,
steep turns and the proper use of NAVAIDs. There is a fifth block
that simulates an actual Instrument Proficiency Check
(IPC).
This software is ideal for pilots who don't fly on the gauges as
frequently as they'd like to, those who need to relearn some
procedures, or those seeking a platform to practice the instrument
recent-flight-experience maneuvers. Instrument
Refresher will help a pilot build confidence in his
instrument skills and get over the refresher hurdle with the
guidance of a qualified, knowledgeable instructor from the privacy
of his own home.
Like On Top
TM, this simulator can be used
anywhere in the world. Most airports are included, PLUS an
airports/navaids editor which can be used to add, maintain, or
update your local airports and/or navaids. Your airports never go
out-of-date!
Yoke:
A joystick or yoke is required, since it's hard to fly IFR with a
game-type joystick (it's too wiggly); various game controllers
(such as the Saitek Model P220 Gamepad) can be used, too. These
little controllers are also useful for laptop flyers.
Force-feedback yokes are not recommended (this is IFR, not combat
dog-fighting!) After all, you're going to be flying with the trim
most of the time.

mandatory recurrent IFR flight check for IFR-rated pilots
