This The Twin Otter turboprop was designed primarily for operators who do not need to use major airports to fly their aircraft from. It operates from dirt, turf, or gravel strips with no problems. It's also able to handle snow and ice, and float operations. The availablity of reverse thrust enhances the Twin Otters controlability on any surface.
This highly versatile aircraft simply refuses to die and the last few years the number of flying 'Twotters' has been increasing, even if the aircraft has been out of production for decades. This can be explained by its structure of multi-purpose twin-engines and its high-wings, allowing it to easily convert from an all-cargo configuration to a comfy commuter. In fact, this aircraft carries a pilot, co-pilot, and up to 20 passengers, depending upon the seating configuration and alternatively the Twin Otter can be equipped for cargo transportation, ambulance duties, supply dropping, aerial survey operations and fire-fighting. The aircraft can be adapted for operations on wheel-skis, spring skis, floats (which necessitates the installation of the short nose from the 100 series), and intermediate flotation gear (for "soft field" operation). Lately, the Twin Otter is being replaced in many float operations by turbine powered DHC-3 single Otters that can carry almost the same load (16 passengers) for a lot less fuel.
