The TechStar is similar in capabilities to
ASA's CX-2, and to Sporty's
Electronic E6-B. They all can do Time-Speed-Distance, Heading
& Drift, Rates, and Weight & Balance. All of these
computers adhere to a common performance specification, thereby
being acceptable for use in all government written tests. The
differences are in screen layout, ease of use, dealer warranty, and
batteries. The TechStar has been programmed with open units
(unlike the CX-2), so it can be used with antiques, or
European aircraft, or US-made aircraft. The TechStar Weight
& Balance function can also be used for larger aircraft
(more than 4 seats).
Batteries:
Like the CX-2, the TechStar uses standard AAA batteries
(which can be obtained anywhere in the world) instead of expensive
wafer-style camera batteries. This is an important matter for users
in remote areas!
Warranty:
The TechStar has a 30-day warranty (a lot less than ASA's
1-year warranty). On the other hand, Sporty's Electronic
E6-B doesn't have any workable warranty (you have
to figure out how to get it back to Sporty's at your own expense
since Sporty's has no local dealers, and then try to get them to
look at it, fix it and get it back to you. Canadians returning a
Sporty's computer usually lose their computer enroute to either the
Canadian or US Customs). The TechStar, like the CX-2
only needs to be returned to your local dealer for warranty
replacement.
- PLUS + Low price; easy to use; good weight-and-balance
