What's a "Sport Plane"?
It's a wide-open mix of old and new! The limits in the FARs say that any of the following examples should qualify . . .

The new FAA Sport Plane category creates an opportunity to save big-time when getting your license!

According to the FAA:

"Light-sport aircraft are simple, low-performance aircraft that are limited to 1,320 lbs. (600 kg) maximum weight, two occupants, a single non-turbine powered engine, maximum stall speed of 45 knots, maximum airspeed of 120 knots, and fixed landing gear."

In addition, pilots don't need a full FAA medical exam! If you have a state driver's license, that's all the medical you need!

As you can see, the Light Sport Plane category brings all types of aircraft together in one easy-to-deal-with group. ASA's new Sport Pilot package explains all you need to know about getting airborne in this exciting (and wide-open) new group of light aircraft!
